One of the primary goals of the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra since its founding in 1949 has been the encouragement of young musicians. FCS held its first Young Artist Competition in 1956. It was open only to high school juniors and seniors. First prize was $100 and an appearance with the orchestra. Second prize was $50. Honorable mention winners received record albums. Over the past 50 years, the competition has evolved into an event that attracts young artists nationwide. The competition now features Junior and Senior groupings. Prize money has substantially increased as well.
The Senior Competition will feature two finalists in performance with the orchestra and will be held as a concert in the Edna Rizley Griffin Hall on the campus of Colorado State University. We look forward to another year of sharing the talents of these young musicians.
