The Fort Collins Symphony announces a benefit concert at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, June 14 at Boardwalk Park, 100 N. Fifth St. in Windsor. Monetary donations for tornado relief will be accepted on behalf of the Community Foundation Serving Greeley and Weld County. This free concert is sponsored in part by a grant from Colorado Council of the Arts and the Town of Windsor.
The concert is titled A Summer of Competition. The performance features an interactive program and includes traditional patriotic favorites, such as John Phillip Sousa's Washington Post and Stars and Stripes Forever, but focuses on musically-and visually-illustrating the upcoming Summer Olympics. Pieces highlighted include John Williams' 1984 Olympic Fanfare, Rimsky-Korsakov's Dance of the Tumblers (gymnastics), Berlioz' March to the Scaffold (platform diving)-with a nod to another summer pastime, Take Me Out to the Ballgame.
To honor the enduring spirit of Windsor residents, Fort Collins Symphony Music Director Wes Kenney added a special piece titled Towards a New Life, at which time donations will be encouraged. Checks should be made to the Community Foundation. Please include "tornado relief benefit" on the memo line. Also, the opportunity to get up on stage and conduct the orchestra-after receiving conducting instructions from FCS's award-winning conductor, Maestro Kenney-will be auctioned to the highest bidder.
The FCS concert was previously scheduled to dedicate Boardwalk Park, marking the culmination of a three-year restoration and expansion of the park that was founded in the late 1800s. Boardwalk Park also suffered some damage in the May 22nd tornado. The park's new grassy amphitheater-adjacent to Windsor Lake-is open for the concert. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or a low-backed chair on which to sit.
Directions to the event: Take Highway 392 to Seventh St., head north to Birch Street. Proceed east on Birch, which dead ends in Boardwalk Park's parking lot. Additional on-street is available.
