Support the Symphony

Giving to the Symphony: Endowment
The Fort Collins Symphony Endowment Fund, like the Fort Collins Symphony Association, is a qualified charitable organization with the sole purpose to accept permanent gifts, invest those gifts and return the income to the Symphony. According to the Endowment's governing documents, only the interest income from your donations is available to fund the Symphony's activities; principal from the contributions cannot be used for support. Our Endowment Fund structure guarantees that your gift will continue to give for as long as the Symphony continues to serve as an enduring cornerstone of our community's cultural foundation.

Many approaches are available to support the Endowment Fund:

  1. Current gifts of cash or stock. Arrange for a gift of stock, bonds or mutual funds to the Endowment.Or, you may write a check. The Endowment can convert these gifts to cash and invest them conservatively. If you have held those items for more than one year, you can claim a charitable deduction against your income taxes for the fair market value of the securities you have donated, and you will not pay capital gains on their increased value. If you have held securities for less than one year, you can take a charitable deduction of their fair market value on the date of your contribution or their cost basis, whichever is less.
  2. Bequests. Make a gift to the Endowment in a will or a revocable living trust to take effect at your death.Bequests by will or revocable trust are a very common form of deferred charitable giving.
  3. Retirement plans. Name the Endowment as the beneficiary of a retirement plan which is tax-efficient.IRAs, 401(k) plans and other retirement plans are subject to income taxes when they are distributed to your individual beneficiaries. However, the Endowment is a qualified charitable organization and will not pay income taxes, leaving other assets in your estate to pass tax-free to friends and family members. The administrators of your retirement plans or your estate planning attorney can help you designate the Endowment as the beneficiary of a variety of retirement plans.
  4. Life insurance policies. Name the Endowment as the primary or secondary beneficiary of life insurance to have the proceeds payable upon your death.
  5. Charitable remainder trust. Donate cash or securities to a trustee who invests your gift, providing income to you for a number of years-or until your death-and then distributes the remainder to the Endowment. This arrangement can be a "win/win" strategy for you and the Endowment, letting you make a gift that qualifies in part for an income tax charitable deduction that insulates you from paying capital gains on what you donate, avoids estate taxes on what you have donated, and leaves the Endowment with a gift.
  6. Charitable lead trust. A charitable lead trust pays the Endowment for a number of years, or during your lifetime, and remaining assets are returned to you or distributed to the individual beneficiaries of your choice. This arrangement can result in significant gifts to your ultimate beneficiaries with significant savings in gift taxes.

As always, please consult your tax advisor prior to giving. For more information on these and other ways to give to the Endowment, please contact the Symphony office at 970-482-4823.
