February 16, 2008 was our 4th year presenting Musical Zoo and our 1st year with a morning program at the Lincoln Center. We had a fun-filled and very musical morning with over 600 children in attendance. The music and energy in each room was obvious, and the smiles of the participants spoke volumes.
This was our first year offering 100 complimentary tickets to social service agencies in our community. Tickets were distributed to Aztlan Center, Boys and Girls Club of Fort Collins, United Way Preschool and CASA.
Funding for Musical Zoo was the best ever! Thank you to our major sponsors: Bohemian Foundation, An Anonymous Donor, Boomer Music Co., Philomusica, The Jung-Springbergs, The Fort Collins Symphony Guild Members, and Natural Piano.
Nicolette Bischof and Gloria Willis shared the major responsibilities for co-chairing MZ. Nicolette Bischof had organized a wonderful program, with Nicole Cordova as the Emcee.
Our Program was varied with unique musical presentations and lively high energy. The program included: "Maravilla" Ballet Folklorico, Centennial Children’s Chorus, Canyon Concert Ballet performing "Carnival of the Animals," The Jazz Whistler, Introduction to Woodwind Instruments, Introduction to Brass Instruments, Movement to Music with the children and Introduction to Stringed Instruments with Everitt Merritt and Branden Sipes.
The Petting of Instruments in the Columbine Room was crowded with children and parents anxious to "pet" an instrument under the direction of a student musician. Boomer Music, under the new management of Drew Holmes, participated fully as in previous years. Philomusica also brought numerous stringed instruments and a tuba to add to the instrument offerings We received student musicians from Poudre High, Blevins Jr. High and Lesher Jr. High.
Jenny Henke handled our publicity with the local papers and the news releases; giving us wonderful coverage. Our ads were colorful and eye-catching and a Coloradoan reporter and photographer were at Musical Zoo the morning of the event. A follow-up article appeared in the newspaper the day after Musical Zoo and was big surprise and a bonus. Hopefully, you saw our flyer or the advertising in area papers.
We had wonderful Guild support at Musical Zoo and will reach out for more volunteers next year with larger numbers anticipated. Thank you to the following Guild members who assisted with Musical Zoo 2008:
Eva Sue Littleton, Marianne Morrison, Carol Shafer, Jenny Henke, Shirley Baskett, Faye Ireland, Lynn Leedy, Nicolette Bischof, Gunter Bischof, Beth Bullard, Rathna Murthy, Cheryl Kaup, Jane Sullivan, Kareen Davison, Nancy Goldey, Gloria Willis and Kathy Roesner.
Our Guild development person, Karen Graham, will begin soon looking at possible grants and funding for Musical Zoo 2009. So many positive comments were made by adults bringing children to Musical Zoo. This musical event, reaching out to our community, is a wonderful way to introduce children to the JOY of music.
